English Lessons in Libya

Joss Visited an IDP (internationally displaced persons) camp in Libya for people who have been displaced by ongoing political and geographical turmoil in the region. The Fallah camp leader explained to Joss, via a translator, that he would like to learn English so he can communicate effectively on behalf of the refugee community to the UN and various NGO organisations. As you can see in the video he has been recording torture cases and very much wants the world to know this is happening. With added English language skills he feels the world is more likely to hear what has been happening and hopefully care enough to encourage change on a regional, national and international level.

We are working with a locally based English teacher to fulfil this request. We specified that a woman must be included in the class so that she can effectively represent and communicate the women and family issues which may differ from other camp members. This has been a great success so far and gender violence issues have been discussed and addressed with other charities and organisations including Amnesty International.  The camp leader, Hussein, who you can see in the video, is very happy to partner his awareness campaign of the torture issues alongside the gender violence concerns Khadija is working on. They have been working together and attending conferences in Tunisia and other places with invigorated confidence from the English lessons and support from the Joss Stone Foundation.

So far English spoken and written at level one has been achieved. We are now working on level two and would love to continue these lessons with your support. We are grateful to Expertise Consultancy in Tripoli for kindly donating in kind towards this project. Any amount you  donate will go directly to keep the classes running and continue to support the group of 4-6 who have been attending throughout.
