In San Jose we met with an incredible woman called Gail Nystrom. She set up a foundation in Costa Rica that is dedicated to improving the quality of life of the most vulnerable populations throughout the country. The foundation manages over 50 volunteer projects in Costa Rica and we were lucky enough to accompany Gail on a tour of one of Costa Rica’s poorest areas, La Carpio.

La Carpio is an immigrant community mainly populated with migrants from Nicaragua who fled during the revolution in the late 70’s. Many fled the country and many children were sent away by their parents who considered it a safer choice. To cut a very long story short lots of Nicaraguans ended up building a settlement on a 9 mile square piece of land previously used for recreation. The levels of poverty were huge, with only plastic and tin shacks for shelter and absolutely no access to the basics of living like clean water, healthy food and any form of education.

Then Gail, armed with some volunteers came along in 1997 and started to make a real positive impact. She told us how she uses simple principles, starting with clean water, then good food, then good shelter and finally good education, in that order. She says she also relies on the charitable efforts of those she has helped first, to give back to the community they are from. During our visit she showed us around the ‘Village of Hope’ and we got to see some of the establishments she has created. From small libraries and drop in centres to just simply making people care for their gardens and plants. After that we ventured towards the river to see some of the housing that is still in a bad way.

This showed us that there is still a lot of work to be done but if we can trust anyone to do it it would be Gail and the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation. To find out more about the charity please visit... http://www.crhf.org
